The Ecobrick Movement in the UK

The Global Ecobrick Alliance (GEA) is a world wide movement to give our plastic value, to help the understanding of what plastic is and the effect it is having on our biosphere. The UK Facebook group was set up to support UK ecobrickers in March 2018 with 5 members. By March 2019 membership stood at 40000 plus over 30 local groups around the UK. You can join here https://www.facebook.com/groups/ecobricksUK/

Lucie and her son Robbie took part in the training course to be ecobrick trainers and become the first two UK people to become certified ecobrick trainers. If you would like to book either of them or one of the growing number of ecobrick trainers to come and lead an ecobrick workshop in your community please book via the ecobricks website https://www.ecobricks.org/trainings/

What is an ecobrick?

An ecobrick is a clear plastic bottle packed to a set density with single use plastic – it’s the most immediate and impactful biosphere positive action we can all take. Then, when we make that incredible ecobrick we create a building block which we use to make amazing things, bringing wider benefits than just helping the biosphere – and that’s only a tiny part of the story . . .

What else is ecobricking about?

Making an ecobrick doesn’t just keep our hands busy, it sparks heads and hearts to spring into action too. Ecobricking is a holistic approach to reducing plastic in our lives so as we ecobrick we also focus on those lovely R words we all know; Refuse, Reduce, Reuse . . . it’s all these combined actions that get us to the point where we have the ‘best ecobrick’, the one we cannot make because we have so little plastic left to use.  The key principles are:

  • Raise our awareness of plastic and its impact on the biosphere, particularly after use
  • Extend our understanding of recycling and waste management to help change our future buying behaviour
  • Embrace taking personal responsibility for what we use that impacts the biosphere negatively
  • Rs in abundance; Refuse, Reduce, Reuse . . .
  • Working together locally in our homes and communities to make the most of these amazing building blocks we create

Is that it then? Well maybe not all, quite often as we travel the ecobricking journey we find our voices also become stronger, we find we want to spread the word and encourage others to join in too, so please do - but let them know why first!  That’s just the same as how it all started . . .

Let ecobricks help your community connect and clean up our biosphere,

New Forest Aquaponics CIC are here to support UK community groups with ecobricking, to do this we need funds for transporting ecobricks to those who need them, for increasing the numbers of ecobrick trainers in the UK, and providing resources to break down any social economic barriers preventing ecobricks being utilised by communities, as well as supporting our global network.
